29 October, 2017
Verbruggen Hall, Sydney Conservatorium
Mezzo-soprano Bronwyn Douglass has been announced as the recipient of the 2017 Lady Fairfax New York Scholarship, awarded by the Opera Foundation for young Australians. Her assured performance at a public recital on Sunday impressed, setting her apart from the other finalists.
“The ease with which Bronwyn presented her contrasting arias, her adhesion to the style of the repertoire combined with her advanced vocal technique and her charming stage presence convinced us that she deserved most to win.” Anke Höppner, 2017 Head Adjudicator and Member of the Foundation’s Music Advisory Council.
Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge Bel Canto Award
Saturday 16 September, 2017
Verbruggen Hall, Sydney Conservatorium
It was a big night for 28-year old Douglass, who was placed third in the competiton in 2016. As well as taking home a cash prize of $30,000 as the winner of this year’s Bel Canto Award, she won the Georg Solti Accademia di Bel Canto Summer School prize, the Tait Memorial Trust Prize, which gives the recipient the chance to perform in a TMT concert in London, and the Audience Choice Award. She also won the Best Mozart and Handel Aria award for her performance of Deh, per questo istante solo from Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito at the Preliminary Finals.
At the Finals, Douglass sang Per questa fiamma indomita from Donizetti’s Anna Bolena, and Werther!…Qui m’aurait dit… Ces lettres! from Massenet’s Werther, displaying a beautiful tone across her entire register, an expressive emotional connection to the airas, and a quietly radiant presence.
Announcing the winners Maestro Bonynge AC CBE had special praise for Douglass’s performance of the Werther aria.
Tudor Portraits - Sydney Philharmonia Choirs
City Recital Hall, Sydney
24 - 27 August, 2017
"Bronwyn Douglass – her rich, warm tone, clear at the top, subtle at the bottom, and backed by bags of personality – stood out."
"Douglass... with her pinpoint diction and a ripe sense of pathos. Drunken Alice swooped and swayed with a skilful deployment of chest voice, while poor bereaved Jane’s distress rang out crystal clear, every note and word true as iron. Hers is a voice well worth hearing more of."
